Capital town: Philipsburg
Airport: Princes JulianaThis is one of the best freeports in the whole Caribbean. The island is only 37 miles square, but it contains in effect two states, flies two flags, uses three currencies and speaks at least three languages - English, Dutch and French, though you can get by anywhere with English.
The northern half is called St. Martin and is French; the southern half is called Sint Maarten and is Dutch - the major airport is on the Dutch side. The island is actually the smallest piece of territory in the world where two foreign powers amicably co-exist.
Leaving Philipsburg to the west, you pass near the remains of the 17th century Fort Amsterdam and Cay Bay. You can take a direct route to Marigot, the French capital, passing the Border Monument (the only formal indication that you are entering France) and Mt. Concordia where the Dutch and French signed their original treaty of co-existence.
